Greyhound
racing is a controversial topic. Some people feel that the sport is hard
on the animals, and borders on animal cruelty and endangerment. Many factors
must be considered in what is now being deemed a dying industry.
Several programs help place retired racers with loving families. Greyhounds make great pets. If the dog were abused, malnourished, beaten, or generally mistreated, it would be unable to perform well in a race. Regular vet checkups, feeding and overall care are habits that any dog owner who plans on making a profit should follow. In many circumstances, greyhounds are not treated as pets. They are often regarded and treated the way farmers treat their livestock. A decent farmer would care for each sheep in the flock, because they all are able to produce valuable wool, just as a good race dog owner recognizes the value of each dog.
