  Very sensitive to temperature—greyhounds overheat easily, and get cold quickly. They should not be left in the yard on a hot day for long periods of time, or out in cold weather. Greyhounds lack the undercoat that most other breeds have, for this reason, when taking a greyhound on a winter walk a coat is a must. Coats specifically designed for greyhounds can be found on several websites. The Triangle Greyhound Society has an excellent list of greyhound coat merchants.

Greyhounds also cannot be tied up in the yard like many other breeds. There have been many sad cases of greyhounds snapping their own necks or hanging themselves when tied up. Special adjustable collars are recommended for greyhounds, and can also be found on the greyhound.com website.

  The first days are the hardest days. Greyhounds tend to have a bit of separation anxiety--some more severe than others. Leaving a dog with separation anxiety at home alone can cause a list of behavior problems and frustrations for both the dog and the family. Howling, trash digging and chewing are just a brief list of things your beloved new pet may do when left alone. Try to have someone around as much as possible during the first month. Try leaving for brief periods of time at first to reassure your anxious new pet that you will be returning. In time they will pick up on your work patterns, and grow more accustomed to being alone. Most will probably prefer being close to you, and may even follow you from room to room.
