The Breakheart Reservation, Bark Place Dog Park is double gated, a convenient safety feature to keep your pooch from escaping when another dogs enter the park. The fenced in area is about the size of a basketball court, perhaps a bit larger, and oval. The ground is a rough mulch, and it tends to become a tad muddy when it rains so bringing a towel to wipe those soiled paws and feet might be a wise idea. Benches are provided for weary owners to relax and watch their dogs enjoy a moment of off leash freedom; there is also the ever popular fire hydrant, if your dog likes that sort of thing.

When I was there, there were a couple of Mastiffs — an English and a Bull — which were fine for my greyhound, but they did get a little to rough for the tiny Shih-tzu; His owners quickly carried him outside the gates to safety. The benches inside are cheap plastic and get fairly dirty. Also, if your dog gets thirsty easily, it’s a good idea to either bring water or have your dog drink up at the specially built doggie fountain located at the welcome center.

Though there were remnants past used tennis balls lying about, don’t count on any toys being provided in the dog park. But not to fret, being in the reservation's woods there’s always the option of throwing a stick, and bringing your own toys is always a lot of fun. Also keep in mind that the fence is only about four feet high. If your dog happens to be a jumper, you might want to keep an extra close eye; Breakheart is 640-acres of hardwood forest that would not be fun to chase a dog through. To check out the park layout and other fun activities please visit our MAPS section , FOBR, or the Massachusets state site for Breakheart.

The other dog owners were very friendly and polite, and many of the park’s patrons are locals who live nearby. Raymond, the owner of a mixed-breed collie, said, “I love it here. I try to come twice a day if I can. I’ve been coming here since I was a teenager.”

When you’re done with the dog park, go check out the many miles of hiking trails that weave through Breakheart Reservation. Be mindful of the “hiker aptitude” markers before you go on any trails. Aside form the risk of overexerting yourself, your dog might slip down one of the steep hills and injure itself as well.

All in all, Breakheart’s dog park and the surrounding reservation are definitely worth a visit
